Gene test for grey factor in alpaca

Twenty-two colors for alpaca fleece have been defined from which a plethora of shades and blends exist. Predictability of color outcome in offspring is meaningful for breeders who have a commercial interest in alpaca wool. Grey fleece is increasingly in demand, but rather rare. The so-called classic grey color is inherited by a specific variant of the KIT gene and can be determined by molecular genetic methods. In addition, homozygosity in this particular gene locus leads to embryonic lethality, i.e. affected embryos die in the womb at an early stage of their development.
